The discussion about insects confirms my choice about being a vegetarian.

Also, when I was growing up, practically the only thing I would eat was macaroni and cheese...that is, until my mother introduced me to Hamburger Helper, and my world grew by leaps and bounds. You have my sympathy.

I would only eat baked beans and yoghurt for about three years as a kid. Apparently I called beans 'Melvins'. I have no idea what that refers to. I think my mum was delighted my kids were so picky. Revenge is a dish best eaten cold.

Completely relate to your insights into food and young children, exhausting stuff. And something that I often feel I ‘should’ be doing better at but sometimes it is totally impossible! xx

Once I'd lowered my expectations to 'is everyone alive and fed' things got a lot easier. x

I once ordered fried cricket tacos at a local restaurant. They might have been good eaten immediately, but I waited (and waited) for my friends to be served. The crickets were a bit...pointy. I choked them down and vowed I would eat insects if only if I was on the verge of starving.

ha ha! I imagine they would indeed have been pointy

I LOVE that you named your sourdough!

I would've devoured your butternut. Yum!

I'm curious about camas....

My friend made cricket cookies once, with ground cricket flour. Some had an actual cricket set on top of the cookie before baking. I tried the ones without the cricket topping. They were good! I took a bunch to work. One guy at one with the cricket and loved it. Another guy ate one without the cricket, didn't know it had cricket flour, thought he liked it , and then spit it out once I told him. It was good times.

They sell crickets here in the States as novelty snacks, salted and flavored like potato chips. That's hardly a path to sustainable eating, but maybe it'll be both the roaches and cricket-eaters that survive the doom. 🤷‍♀️

We were not allowed to devour the butternut, which was part of the problem! Mr. Butternut was an active member of our family for some time!
