Also, not a shop, but I’ll never forget the now sadly binned World of Timber attraction at Blackgang Chine on the Isle of Wight…

What a great post - I loved everything! Especially Jacob and the angel, though Jacob looks pretty beaten; and the Cov Cath St Michael and the Devil is awesome. All of the artwork in that cathedral is amazing - have you visited?

I have. I grew up about half an hour away from Coventry Cathedral and we did a lot of school trips there. I was entirely bored by it as a child but as an adult I grew to love it. I adore the etched angels in the windows. x

Oh there’s so much in here I love. I would buy your band merch. I’m a sucker for it.

David Hockney is a genius and I totally relate to the emotional response.

I did my Art A level project on Jacob Epstein. I wasn’t aware of his sordid private life. I also love Gaugin’s colour but he had some dubious morals. It’s tricky and something I have often mulled over. We celebrate great work but where do we draw a line?

There’s a book called Art Monsters (I think) which is about this and I keep meaning to read it. It is so difficult.

I love that Epstein statue of Jacob and the Angel, never seen it before. The Tate website says its not on display? That seems a shame...

It used to be on permanent display in the lobby of Tate Britain, but since they reorganised everything they have taken it away. I am hoping it makes an appearance again soon.

Another plea for you to do the bands project - i would *love* a little Super Duper Yes badge to pin on my denim jacket 😎 🤣 I am such a fan of Paul Nash and that painting makes the breath catch in my throat too. Didnt know any of the others though so great to be introduced to some new pieces by familiar names. Look forward to the next installment!

I need to get myself a badge maker. Along with a label maker it’s on my list of ‘desirable gadgets’!

Please do the band merch idea! We discussed something similar, however we have zero follow through. We were going to make “vintage” shirts using old blanks and seed the charity shops after making LP covers and listing them, doing eBay transactions for the LPs, etc. The starting point was to use old family photos as art, and then we became grandiose and decided it was too much work. That’s us.

This is an amazing idea, but I agree, a lot of work. That’s what has stopped me from starting (if you see what I mean).

Completely. We made one faux Penguin Classic as a birthday gift and it took us a whole week. The book looked much too new, and aging it involved a variety of time consuming experimental approaches.

This post reminded me of a sculpture I saw in, I think, The Observer magazine easily 20 years ago, maybe more. Just googled it and it’s in the bloody V&A! Fancy another visit?

Totes Meer - no words. Positively arresting. Bigger Trees looks like something I would want to walk through on a summer day IRL. Lovely.

I really think you’re now obliged to acquire a squadron of cats and to use those names! I’m so chuffed my journaling prompt fed into this :)
